Defending against a knife is extremely dangerous and even professionals are at high risk of injury. There is no guaranteed safe defence against a knife, but understanding key principles can increase your chances of avoiding injury and protecting others.

Using a cane for self-protection against a knife can be a very effective improvised weapon due to its reach and versatility. It is important to remember:

  • Real knife attacks are extremely dangerous and unpredictable
  • Avoid confrontation if at all possible
  • Use distraction, throw something to shift attention 
  • Use verbal de-escalation and escape as your first priority
  • Train with professionals if you want to be truly prepared
